PRE-EMPLOYMENT FIREFIGHTER PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE TEST I.
Dress Code Jeans or similar trousers and a t-shirt, or other loose shirt work well. It is preferable that most body surfaces be covered to minimize abrasions and sticking to the turnout gear, i.e., no shorts, tank tops, or halters. Comfortable shoes should be worn. In cold rainy weather, clothing which is warm or waterproof will be necessary. Socks are mandatory. You should avoid wearing jewelry and loose hair styles. In addition, you should avoid carrying purses or other objects that you have to keep track of throughout the testing process. II.

Withdrawal Statement If after the second attempt you have not successfully passed the test, you will be automatically disqualified and will be asked to sign a withdrawal statement. The statement shows that you acknowledge the fact that you were given two (2) opportunities to successfully complete the physical performance test and were unable to do so and that you understand that this disqualifies you and eliminates you from further consideration for the position of Firefighter during the current selection process. Events
Test #1 Aerial Climb Firefighters are required to climb and work from ladders when performing rescue and firefighting tasks. This eighty (80) foot climb is designed to allow candidates to safely experience this job requirement and demonstrate their ability or willingness to perform this job task. When the monitor says "Go", you will: Climb the ladder extended eighty (80) feet set at a seventy-five (75) degree angle. You will climb the ladder one rung at a time with your hands on the rung to the top. When you reach the top, touch the top rung and descend the ladder in a controlled manner returning to the ground. For safety reasons, each candidate will wear a ladder belt and have a safety line attached. This event is not timed. During this event, candidates must stay in constant motion! Upon finishing the aerial climb, proceed to the hose drag event. Test #2 Hose Drag Firefighters are required to advance fire hoses in order to fight fires. This event will measure back and leg strength. This event represents a realistic simulation of a job requirement. Your Physical Performance Test time begins with this event. Drag by the male end, a length of four (4 " ) inch fire hose consisting of two (2) fifty (50) feet sections of double jacketed 4" hose coupled together for a total distance of one hundred (100) feet. Drag the hose two hundred (200) feet. Orange cones will be set up to designate the finish line for the hose drag. You may drag the hose by any method that you feel comfortable with. You may not bundle up the hose and attempt to carry it: It must be dragged. The monitor will stay with you during the entire event, checking to make sure you walk. Test #3 Hose Unroll - Roll One of the most common duties of all Firefighters is the rolling and unrolling of fire hose. After a fire, fatigued Firefighters must be able to roll hundreds of feet of hose onto pumpers. At the scene of a fire, time can be critical in stretching and advancing hose line. Unroll a fifty (50) foot section of double jacketed 2 1/2" fire hose. DO NOT THROW THE HOSE. Then starting with the male end re-roll the section of the hose. You may unroll and roll the hose in any way that you feel comfortable. Test #4 Ladder Event Firefighters are required to remove ladders and equipment mounted on the apparatus in order to perform firefighting and rescue work. Remove from a Fire Department pumper, a fourteen (14) foot Fire Department roof ladder and place it against a building. The ladder shall be placed at the proper angle to facilitate safe climbing. You will then grasp a rolled fifty (50) foot section of 2 1/2" double jacketed fire hose and carry the hose up the ladder and touch the top rung and climb back down the ladder, placing the hose on the ground, and return the ladder to the pumper. (DO NOT REMOUNT THE LADDER). You may carry and climb the ladder in any way that you feel comfortable. A monitor will butt the ladder while you raise it. If the ladder is set in an unsafe manner, the monitor will ask you to stop and reset the ladder. Time will continue to run. A monitor will be near you during the entire event, checking that you walk and that you do not run. Test #5 Joist Walk Firefighters are required to work on high ladders, to walk near open areas and/or rafters (or roofs) of buildings during firefighting and/or rescue and are liable to slip and fall if they lack good balance. Walk the length of two (2) sixteen (16) foot, two by six (2X6) on edge, simulating joists in a building, carrying a rolled up fifty (50) foot section of double jacketed 2 1/2" hose. You may only walk on the two 2x6 parts of the device. A five (5) second penalty will be assessed each time that your feet come in contact with the ground or cross blocks supporting the structure. A monitor will stay near you during the entire event, checking that you do not touch anything with your hands or knees, other than the joist. Test #6 Ventilation Event Firefighters are required to ventilate roofs of buildings with hand axes and power tools. This is very strenuous work. The ventilation event addresses the ability to withstand muscle fatigue while performing work. Stand astride the ventilation platform, grasp the nine point two (9.2) pound sledge hammer with both hands, and strike the sliding anvil with strokes sufficient to move it from the starting edge to the finish edge. At completion, safely put the hammer down and proceed to the next event. You may hit the anvil in a manner that is most comfortable. The best technique is often standing slightly in front of the anvil, while using firm short strokes to move the anvil. A monitor will accompany you during the entire event, and will notify you when the anvil has touched the end. Test #7 High Rise Event Firefighters are required to carry hose, nozzles and various types of equipment up and down stairs in order to perform the task of firefighting and rescue work. Arm, shoulder, leg and back strength are measured by this task, along with aerobic capacity to perform a muscle fatiguing job activity. These represent a realistic simulation of a job requirement. Pick up the hose bundle at the starting line, carry it to the stairway and walk down the stairs, taking one (1) step at a time. When you reach the bottom, you will walk down the hall twenty-five (25) feet, around a cone, turn around and walk back twenty-five (25) feet, then proceed back up the stairs, return to the starting line and stop. Both feet must touch the top step each time. This will be repeated, for a total of three (3) consecutive times. The monitor will stay near you at all times checking to see that you do not run and to see that you touch the rail. You must touch each step, and at the finishing line at the end of the event, you must lay the bundle on the ground and touch the "X" on the wall. Time will stop after the "X" is touched. Running, missing steps, dragging or dropping the hose will stop the event and you will be asked to take another try. The time will continue to run. IF AT ANY TIME DURING THE PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE TEST YOU WISH TO TAKE A REST YOU MAY DO SO. YOUR TIME WILL CONTINUE TO RUN. TAKING A BREAK MAY IMPACT YOUR OVERALL SCORE ON THIS TEST. VIII.
